Introduction To The Lolita Style: A Timeline is a timeline magazine introducing and explaining the Lolita fashion sub-style to an international audience outside of Japan. In terms of content, I highlighted key points in the origin and spread of the Lolita trend after researching the topic thoroughly to help answer questions people unfamiliar with the topic may have. Regarding the visuals, I wanted to mimic the busy compositions of Japanese fashion magazines and use illustrations to represent the style.
This project went heavier into research than any of my previous works and I was excited to do it on the Lolita fashion style, a trend I’ve admired. After sorting my research into timeline events, I dove into drawing chibi illustrations as I believed it matched the aesthetic. It was important to me to cover all the different sub-styles within Lolita. When designing the zine, I wanted each spread to be drastically different and related to the key events yet still cohesive as a whole. I stuck to gradients, patterns, and shapes as seen in Japanese zines.
